Villagers along the Damaturu-Maiduguri Road have said soldiers have stopped fighting Boko Haram in the area after Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State chastised them for extorting motorists.

Some of them told TheCable that the attacks have been on the increase since Zulum stopped the soldiers from their illicit act.
A resident said the villages had experienced more attacks by the terrorists as the soldiers were not there to repel them.
“Travellers are being kidnapped every hour and all the military roadblocks are no more there, because these attackers always go without being confronted by the military,” he said.

He said many of them are fleeing into Maiduguri and Damaturu in search of safety. He said the elders of the state have been mum since the development. He said the residents have become scared and will continue to flee their homes until something is done.
Reports had said the army claimed Zulum’s accusation may reverse the gains recorded against the terrorists.
