Spain’s Supreme Court Friday rejected an application for the release of Catalan separatist leader, Jordi Sanchez from prison. Sanchez is expected to be inaugurated as president of Catalan region next week, but he’s being detained over allegation of sedition owing to his role in the region’s botched independence bid last year.
Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena expressed fear that Sanchez would commit the offence for which he is currently held if released.
Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy rejected independence for Catalan and threatened to deal with anyone pushing for it.
“A person who is remanded in custody is not in a situation to exercise the duties required of the president of Catalonia,” government spokesman Inigo Mendez de Vigo told a news conference on Friday when asked about the court’s ruling.
The struggle for a separate country for Catalan sparked Spain’s worst crisis in decades. The central government responded by dissolving Catalonia’s assembly on October 27 and imposed a direct rule, but would later suffer humiliation when the same Catalan separatist parties won an absolute majority of seats in the 135-seat Catalan parliament.
