Babatunde Olusola, a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Ogbomoso, has been detained for 54 days for setting up a parody account on Twitter with former president Goodluck Jonathan’s name.

A parody account is one names after popular persons and used for comic purposes. The user of such account is allowed by Twitter rules but must state in his bio that it is a parody account.

Olusola’s page is named, ‘Goodluck E. Jonathan’ but with the handle, @jayythedope. He has the former president as his profile picture.

His profile read in part, “BrezzisLife, not GEJ.”

Olusola used the handle to fire many witty comments including some subtle jabs at Jonathan’s wife, Patience. He was said to have been arrested on May 23, 2020 after a complaint by Jonathan to Mohammed Adamu, Inspector-General of Police.

The Punch reports that the student’s call log was obtained by a telecommunications service provider. His last call was said to have been from his uncle, a pastor, in Ogbomoso.

He was placed under house arrest by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and ordered to call Olusola to visit him. The student was arrested when he showed up at his uncle’s house.

The student was subsequently charged for impersonation and contravening the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act of 2015.

His bail was fixed at N500,000 while a civil servant of not less than level 15 is expected to stand as his surety.

“Olusola has no parents and has not been able to meet the bail conditions hence his continued detention. However, we believe he will be out soon,” said Tope Akinyode, a human rights lawyer.

The lawyer, however, said Section 22(3)(c) of the Cybercrime Act places the burden on Jonathan to show that Olusola had used the Twitter account to defraud members of the public or defame his character.

Jonathan is currently in Mali on an ECOWAS assignment . He is leading peace talks.
