Officials of the Lagos State Task Force have impounded 163 commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada and arrested 29 riders at Mile 2 and Festac area of Lagos state.
Olayinka Egbeyemi, chairman of the task force team, explained that they had received series of complaints from residents on criminal activities perpetuated by some of these motorcycle operators, like snatching of bags, phones, wallets and jewelries around these areas at night.
He, however, said the acting Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi had directed that 29 arrested motorcycle operators be immediately charged to court for prosecutions.
A resident of the area, Lukumon Lateef commended the agency for responding promptly to their complaints.
He said people living around 2nd Rainbow area and Mile 2 Estate towards Festac could no longer sleep with their eyes closed due to criminal activities perpetuated by some of the motorcycle operators.
He said most of the commercial motorcycle operators were illegal immigrants from neighbouring West African Countries who could not communicate in English.
Egbeyemi urged members of the public to desist from patronizing commercial motorcycle operators on restricted routes as anyone arrested would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
