AU logoPresident Goodluck Jonathan, alongside other African leaders will, today, Monday, converged on Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, for the African Union’s Peace and Security Council meeting on Tuesday.

Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, said, on Sunday, that the Nairobi meeting was a follow-up to an earlier strategy session by African leaders, in  Pretoria, South Africa, on combating terrorism on the continent.

Abati added that while at the meeting report of the African Union Commission on Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa.

“Deliberations at the Nairobi Summit and the adoption of the African Chairperson’s Report by President Jonathan, President Uhuru Kenyatta and other participating Heads of State are expected to lead to more collaborative actions by Nigeria and other African countries to rid the continent of acts of terrorism and violent extremism.

The summit will be chaired by Chadian President, Idriss Deby, who is the Chairman of the Council. The meeting will also focus on the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria, and similar terrorism acts in Mali and other parts of Africa.

The Peace and Security Council is a 15-member African Union’s standing decision-making body responsible for the maintenance of continental peace and security and it came into existence officially on December 26, 2003.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed, National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.), among others, are on the president’s entourage.
