Unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) have attacked Kilargar, a community in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, reportedly killing 12 persons.

The incident occurred on Sunday, TheCable quoted military sources as saying.

The online newspaper reported that many residents fled into nearby bushes when the bandits invaded the community.

It was learnt that soldiers of the Nigerian Army alongside airstrikes by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) repelled the attack, killing many of the insurgents in the process.

It is, however, unknown if the troops suffered casualties in the counter-attack as of the time of filing this report.

Dzarma Zirkusu, a Brigadier-General, and three soldiers of the Nigerian Army were killed when suspected ISWAP fighters invaded the same Askira-Uba LGA in November.
