Three Nigerians living in Ireland, Omowale Owolabi, Raak Sami Sadu and Samson Ajayi have been jailed by an Irish Court for their involvement in a romance scam worth N130m (€250,000).
The three are also members of the Aye Confraternity, known as the Black Axe.
According to prosecutors, the three sent around €250,000 of the victim’s money from Ireland to accounts linked to fake companies set up in Turkey and Vietnam.
The trio are also believed to have used the money to buy products to ship back to Nigeria where they were sold.
Irish media reports that the victim met a man by the name Neil Turner on a dating site, Plenty of Fish in November 2019.
Dublin District Criminal Court heard that “Turner” began asking the woman for money to help with his business.
In return, the victim, over a six-month period, sent over €254,000. She also borrowed a further €50,000 and sent to “Turner”.
Irish law enforcement agency linked the three to Turner and they were arrested and arraigned.
Samson Ajayi pleaded guilty to money laundering and was sentenced to two and half years. wolabi was jailed three years and three months and Sadu two years.
