Three Shot Dead As Youths Protest Oyo Firefighters’ Inability To Save Akesan Market

Three youths have been shot dead after a protest erupted in Oyo town over the failure of the firefighters to stop the inferno that razed the popular Akesan market.

Reports claim the youths had stormed the fire service’s office, burning tires and causing unrest. Their anger is allegedly due to the service’s claim that poor machinery had made it impossible for them to combat the fire.

Despite being only 20 metres away from the market, their response time was reportedly slow.  To battle the raging inferno, a reinforcement of fire fighter has been mobilised from Ibadan, the capital city and Ogbomosho, which is about 50 kilometres away.

The fire started around 1am with nobody able to determine the cause. Only a few shops and a filling station were said to have been unaffected by the fire.
