Thugs and party agents believed to be members of the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) prevented voters of other political parties from voting at polling Unit 021, Afolabi Alasia Street of Apapa-Iganmu LGA in the 2023 Governorship and State Assembly elections in Lagos.
Some of the voters who were at the polling unit as early as 8 a:m could not cast their vote because they were told to either vote for the APC candidate or go home.
While those who voted for the ruling party did it reluctantly for the fear of persecution and harassment of their families in the area.
“I regretted voting today. As I went to the polling unit for my accreditation, some thugs and agents of the APC started calling me enemy of their party, as an Igbo woman they believe I will vote for the Labour Party. The most annoying is with the security arrangement at the polling unit, where no policeman was on duty, so these thugs had a free day with their intimidation and harassment.
“It’s sad that politicians have succeeded in dividing us in this country. I came here to exercise my franchise but I’m being abused for making a choice. As long as I’m concerned this is no election. If not how do you explain a situation where only APC voters are allowed to cast their vote, it really a shame,” she said.
