A speeding truck driver on Sunday, crushed a commercial motorcyclist and a female passenger to death in Effurun, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.
A tricycle rider who witnessed the incident, told journalists that the driver was on high speed, which made it difficult for him to control the truck when he saw the ‘Okada rider’ in the night.

“Both the Okada rider and the female passenger died on the spot. The truck driver for fear of being lynched by angry mob ran away”, the witness said.
It was gathered that the incident, which occurred near the Osubi Slaughter Market at about 9:20pm, led to protest by Okada riders in the area, as they took to the streets and blocked the PTI Junction in Effurun, resulting in traffic gridlock which lasted for hours.

The motorcyclists, bearing leaves on their motorbikes in protest of the death of their colleague, caused traffic jam along the PTI/DSC Expressway axis of the East West Road, demanding that the driver of the truck be fished out and prosecuted, Daily Independent reports.
DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya, the state police command spokesperson, was said not to be available to confirm the incident, but a senior police officer at the Ebrumede Police Station confirmed the story.

The report said the officer disclosed that the bodies have been deposited in a nearby morgue, while efforts are being made to arrest the fleeing truck driver.
