Donald Trump, President of the United States, has unblocked the seven plaintiffs who sued him and members of his administration for blocking them on Twitter.
According to CNN, President Trump unblocked the Twitter users, following the ruling of a federal court last month.
The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University had filed a lawsuit on behalf of seven Twitter users who had been blocked from President Trump’s account.
Passing judgment on the case, a federal judge ruled that the president’s tweets, and the replies below them, are a “public forum”, and that “blocking of the plaintiffs based on their political speech constitutes viewpoint discrimination that violates the First Amendment.”
Despite the ruling, President Trump has still not unblocked all those whom he limited from viewing his tweets.
It has also been learnt that the President plans to appeal the judgement, which stipulates that he cannot block anybody from accessing his social media platforms as a public official. On Monday, the Justice Department filed a notice that said they plan to appeal the ruling.
In a statement, Jameel Jaffer, Executive Director of the Institute, said they’re “pleased” that the White House unblocked their clients but “disappointed that the government intends to appeal” the ruling.
