Liverpool have been charged by UEFA after spectators came onto the pitch during Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Red Bull Salzburg which ended 4-3 in favour of the Reds at Anfield.

The thrilling encounter was marred by two separate incidents, when first a supporter entered the pitch midway through the second half from the Anfield Road end of the stadium, apparently trying to make his way to the dugout, but was intercepted by stewards.

Then, at full-time, a group of youngsters came onto the pitch in a bid to get hold of a shirt from one or more of the Liverpool players.

Salzburg have also been charged after supporters of the Austrian club threw objects on the pitch.

UEFA said the case would be dealt with by its control, ethics and disciplinary body on October 17.

The punishment for a first offence of field invasion in a year in a UEFA competition is a fine of 5,000 euros (£4,458).

It is not the first time Liverpool have been in trouble with Europe’s elite football body. Last year they were fined €20,000 (£17,800) after some supporters threw objects at the Manchester City team bus as it made its way to Anfield, with the damage so severe the bus had to be replaced for the trip home.

The Reds raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.

But Hwang Hee-Chan got one back for the visitors before half-time before Takumi Minamino and Erling Braut Haaland sensationally drew Salzburg level after the break.

But Salah scored his second on 69 minutes to make sure of the win during a nervy night at Anfield.
