The incident was said to have occurred on 27 May at the RCCG, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin City, where the deceased, 100 level student of Microbiology, went to read, according to her friends.

According to friends of the 22-year-old undergraduate, who was popularly known as Uwa, her attackers raped her, smashed her head with a fire extinguisher and left her unconscious.

A security guard at the church reportedly found her in a pool of blood and informed his superiors at the church.

Uwa was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. She, however, succumbed to her injuries three days later.

It was learnt that the late Uwa only recently gained admission into the federal university and had yet to do matriculation as of the time of her death on 30 May.

The story has prompted a rage on social media on Sunday, with Nigerians demanding justice for the late student using the hashtag #JusticeforUWA on Twitter.

A Twitter user with the handle @Weezard2 wrote, “Now this is a girl that just got admission, hasn’t even done matriculation, and she was murdered in church.

@Bubble_minakie tweeted: “This is Uwa, a 22-year-old girl who was raped in RCCG Benin, inside the church, is there no limit to this evil? The culprits are on the run and they must be found and brought to justice.”

Another Twitter user with the handle @MohammedBlack_ wrote: “Saddening how our community gradually becomes unsafe for us. People getting killed on a daily frivolously.

“May Uwa’s soul rest in peace and I hope her family ever finds the strength to bear this loss. This is for all of us. Hopefully, the perpetrators are caught! #justiceForUwa.”

@OptomDr0812, who claims to be friends with the deceased, wrote: “I had high hopes that you will make it, I told your mum to be strong, you are just too soft to go through such excruciating pain.

“You fought with those animals, you fought to stay alive in ICU, please don’t rest until those demons are caught. #justiceforuwa.”

The Edo State Police Command had yet to respond to the incident as at the time of filing this report.
