A 400-level student of the Department of Microbiology of the University of Ilorin has reportedly beaten a lecturer into coma.
The student, identified simply as Captain Walz, was said to have assaulted his project supervisor after she refused to offer advice on his failed assessment. Walz however didn’t observe the compulsory Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) and sought the lecturer’s help.
The victim, identified as Mrs Zakaria, is said to be the student’s project supervisor.
According to findings, the student had gone to the woman’s office to seek her help over his failure to do his SIWES.
But following the lecturer’s refuser, Walz reportedly became furious and assaulted Mrs Zakariya inflicting severe injuries on her.
She was subsequently rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The Director of Corporate Affairs of the institution, Mr Kunle Akogun confirmed the development in an interview on Saturday night.
“Yes, the incident is true but the lecturer is now in a stable condition. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Abdulkareem Age visited her in the company of some Dean’s and other university staff,” Akogun told Daily Trust.
“They described further described the incident unfortunate and sad and assured justice will be done on the matter.
“He ordered proper care of the victim on the bill of the university.”
It was learnt that the student has been arrested by the security unit of the university and handed over to the police.
