The police in Delta State have confirmed that some unknown gunmen have killed three of its men at Okpanam in Oshimili Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
The incident occurred on Sunday when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okpanam Police Station received a distress call from a community leader of an attack on the vigilante team in his street.
The DPO subsequently mobilised four of his men to the location, unaware of the danger that lie ahead.
As the security team drove out from the station, some armed men opened fire on them, killing three of them on the spot. They then carted away their rifles.
The slain officers are: ASP Eke Francis, Inspector Joshua Akengbo and Corporal Perekedo Unene.
The fourth policeman, Bassey Wisdom, who was injured, is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Reacting, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, claimed one of the suspects has been arrested.
“Today (Sunday) at about 4.40 hours of the early morning, men of Okpanam Division while responding to a distressed call, were ambushed by unknown persons, unknown armed hoodlums. And they killed three of our personnel.
“The command has been able to arrest one of the suspects who is helping us with useful information.
“I want to use this opportunity to call on members of the public with useful information to avail us with it.
“We are doing our best and in no time, the remaining suspects would be arrested and brought to book,” he vowed.
