In what could be described as an incredible scene from an action movie, operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have seized 324 textile materials and 52 cartons of tin tomatoes with a duty value of N2.613 million hidden in various compartments of a vehicle by smugglers.
The vehicle, a five-seater salon car, was apprehended by operatives of the service at the Seme border.
The roof panel, the bonnet, the floor sub-frame of the passengers’ seat floor, the dashboard panel, boot aperture and rear bumper of the car were turned into a shopping complex as the smuggled items were expertly concealed in the aforementioned compartments by the smugglers.
Muhammed Aliyu, Controller of Customs, Seme Area Command, noted that the due to the high-level checks at the land borders, the smugglers are now revising and adopting new methods to perpetuate their illegal act.
Ailyu, however, said the service was unable to apprehend the driver and passenger commuting in the vehicle as they fled upon noticing the customs’ operatives.
He added that their target is to confiscate the smuggled items rather than chase the smugglers, as the latter action could prevent them from impounding the contrabands.
“They normally come in two, a driver and a passenger. If you try to get the driver when he runs away, the passenger would jump into the steering and move with the car. So sometimes, we concentrate on, we put more effort to secure the vehicle than go for the suspect,” he said.
