Natasha Akpoti, Kogi governorship candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has narrated how her kinsmen booed and called her ‘ashawo’, in the build up to the November 16 election.

‘Ashawo’ is a Nigerian slang for prostitute.

According to her, the incident took place during the stakeholders meeting organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Akpoti, in an interview with the BBC Pidgin, broke down in tears as she narrated how her own people betrayed and treated her like a criminal.

The politician, who is the first female governorship candidate in the state, also explained that hoodlums attacked her on the way to the meeting.

She alleged that the thugs were sent by the All Progressives Congress (APC), to frustrate her efforts towards the election.

The INEC had disqualified her from contesting the poll, however, she was restored by an order of the Appeal Court, days to the exercise.
