Sir Alan Sugar, the host of BBC show, ‘The Apprentice’, on Monday, posted an alleged racist tweet about the Senegalese National team players, playing at the ongoing World Cup.
Sugar wrote on Twitter that he recognized some of the players, who he said sell wares at Marbella beach in Spain. The entrepreneur insinuated the players multitask by playing football and trading.
He posted a picture of the team, with wares displayed in front of them.
The 71-year-old tweeted: “I recognize some of these guys from the beach in Marbella. Multitasking resourceful chaps.”
However, hundreds of people branded his comment ‘racist’.
Sugar, who is the 95th richest person in the United Kingdom, defended his tweet, and rather asked what was wrong with it.
He later deleted the message and apologized. The writer claimed the tweet was a joke that had been “interpreted in a wrong way as being offensive by a few people.”
The BBC also twitted, acknowledging Lord Sugar’s apology, and that the message was misjudged.
Senegal defeated Poland in their opening Group H World Cup game on Tuesday, by 2-1.
Lord Sugar has acknowledged this was a seriously misjudged tweet, and he’s in no doubt about our view on this. It’s right he’s apologised unreservedly.
