A video has emerged showing the Catholic Bishop of Uyo Diocese, John Ebebe Ayah, rejecting a monetary gift by Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State.
In the video sighted by Newsbreak.ng, the governor after announcing a N25 million donation by the state government, his family and the judiciary, told Bishop Ayah that “I will whisper my package to you later”.
But the religious leader subtly rejected the money, asking the governor to instead settle salaries of civil servants.
The exchange happened on Sunday during the Mass for Justice Emmanuel Agim Akomaye’s elevation to the Supreme Court.
After the governor announced his N25 million donation to the church, he added: “You are our pride, the pride of Cross River North, the son of the soil, Bishop John Ayah, I will whisper my package to you later.”
In his response the Bishop said: “I want to talk. The governor is my brother, we are both from Cross River North.
“I want to appreciate the governor and tell him to package whatever he has for me, add to it and use it to pay the salaries of the workers.”
The governor defended himself, saying that salaries were ready, and that his administration has been consistent with salary payment since he became governor of Cross River State in 2015.
