Allen Onyema, chairman of Air Peace, has fulfilled his N20 million promise to the Nigerian Super Eagles.
Onyema had promised N20 million cash reward to the team if they defeat the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in an away 2022 World Cup qualifier.
The Eagles emerged victorious, defeating their hosts 2-1 on Tuesday.
The Nigerian team, who flew to and from Cape Verde in one of Air Peace’s brand new Embraer 195-E2 aircraft, received the N20 million cheque upon arrival on Wednesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport ((MMIA), Lagos.
The Air Peace boss congratulated the players on their second win in the qualifiers campaign, and charged them to also emerge victorious in subsequent games.
He said he was delighted that the Eagles did not disappoint the nation.
“We believe in your capabilities and have faith in you,” he said.
“I am happy that you fulfilled your promise to the nation, knowing that you carry the aspirations of Nigerians on your young shoulders. When you were one-zero down, everybody was panicking. Everybody was praying. And you responded like lions and won the match. There were celebrations all over the country- North, South, East and West”, Onyema stated.
He also implored the team to sustain the winning streak and continue uniting Nigerians on the pitch.
He added that Air Peace believes in the team and will continue to support them to take Nigerian football to greater heights.
Speaking on behalf of the team, captain, Ahmed Musa, said he enjoyed flying in the brand new E195-E2 aircraft.
He thanked Onyema for his kind gesture, adding that the Air Peace chairman’s unity speech really inspired the players.
The airline had last week signed a sponsorship deal with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) worth over N300 million annually renewable for the next four years.
