The Lagos State government has projected that the state may have 120,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) by July.

Professor Akin Abayomi, the state Commissioner for Health, stated this while providing an update on the COVID-19 pandemic at a press conference in Alausa on Friday.
According to Abayomi, the projection is based on a model adopted by the state government.

He explained that the state is yet to reach the peak of the virus, noting that it could be reached by July or August going by the current rate of infection.
He said: “Just a month ago, on April 7, we saw 10 cases per day. Two weeks later it was 32, then 70 cases. We are now seeing above 100 cases per day. This shows our graph is moving in a gentle incline upwards.
“We definitely have not reached the peak of our outbreak. We suspect that the peak will happen sometime in July or August and so we are preparing for the oncoming; we are increasing our capacity and strategies to deal with this situation.”

The commissioner stated that the state has expanded its testing capacity testings to target a number of people.
He attributed the sharp rise in cases being recorded to the decentralisation of sample collection across the 20 Local Governments Areas in the state.
He noted that 97 per cent of positive cases at its isolation centres were mild and moderate cases.

He also revealed that Alimosho, Oshodi, and Isolo Local Government Areas of the state have begun to record a high rate of COVID-19 cases.
He said if not for the strategies implemented by the state government, Lagos would have recorded 6,000 cases as of today.

Abayomi also announced that the state will commence the clinical trial of hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug, to treat COVID-19 patients next week.
Lagos State has recorded 1,491 confirmed coronavirus cases as of Thursday, the highest number of cases in Nigeria.
The state recorded 183 cases on Thursday, the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases by a state in a single day since the outbreak of the virus in the country in March.
