The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it has uncovered a plan by some unidentified persons to send suspected political thugs from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, to set its National Secretariat in Abuja ablaze.
Hilliard Eta, APC National Vice-Chairman (South-South), who is acting Chairman on behalf of Abiola Ajimobi, made the allegation at a press briefing on Wednesday.
Eta also alleged that his life was being threatened.
The acting APC chairman, however, did not disclose the sponsors of the purported attack.
He said: “We got information that they are going to send thugs from Port Harcourt, they are coming here to burn the Secretariat and make it look like the National Working Committee instigated a fire incident so that the Secretariat will be burnt down and then, they will give the impression that it is the NWC that is burning down the Secretariat because they don’t want Victor Giadom to come in.
“They have two intentions, that is number one. Number two is that they are going to make an attempt on my life. I just thought that I should let the press know this.“
But in his reaction, Victor Giadom, the factional APC National Chairman, said Eta should report the matter to the police.
He said: “Ordinarily, I would not have reacted. If he has such information, let him report to the Police. The police have the capability to track such persons.
“Maybe that is his plan because we all know that there is a ban on interstate movement and it is difficult. He should report to the police if he has any such information except, of course, he is the one planning to briBut ng in people from Calabar.”
The APC NWC has been enmeshed in a leadership crisis following the judgement of the Court of Appeal (Abuja Division) which upheld the decision of an FCT High Court, which barred Adams Oshimohole from parading himself as the party’s National Chairman.
The APC NWC announced Ajimobi, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South) as the party’s acting National Chairman pending the determination of the suit against Oshiomhole.
But with Ajimobi not available, the NWC announced that Eta will act on the former Oyo State governor’s behalf.
However, Giadom the former deputy national secretary of the party, declared himself acting chairman, citing a subsisting court order.
