A northern leader, Tanko Yakassai has admitted collecting N53m from Tony Anenih, former Peoples Democratic Party board of trustees chairman. Anenih had written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, also admitting receipt of N260m from former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, of which he claimed Yakassai received the said amount. In a Vanguard report, Takassai said it was true he and “eight others collected N53m from Chief Tony Anenih to pay advocacy visit to prominent northern emirs to mobilize their subjects for a hitch free 2015 general elections. I want to make it abundantly clear that I didn’t receive money from Chief Anenih in my private capacity as Tanko Yakasai but to patriotic individuals who are interested in the peaceful coexistence of the polity”. Yakassai said the money was meant to defray the incidental costs borne by members of the group, namely former minister of state, foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mamman Anka, Barrister Bitrus Gwada and Alhaji Suleiman Lawal, Dr. Bahago, Chief John Macklink from Plateau, and Senator Sodangi.
Yakassai added that they paid visits to some northern emirs, namely Emir of Anka, Emir of Ilorin, Emir of Nassarawa, Minnie, Bauchi, Zuru, Kebbi, Katsina, Dutse, Hadejia, Representatives of emir of Daurawa, The Tor Tiv, the Gwom Gbom Jos, Ohimege Igu, Kotonkarfe, Etsu of Abaji, Etsu Nupe and Atta Igala.
Yakassai had earlier denied collecting money from President Goodluck Jonathan or from anyone linked to him.
