The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ayuba Elkana, has said the embargo on firearms licence is still in force, noting that the police have stopped issuing licence to citizens who wished to own guns.
Newsbreak reports that Elkana’s comment comes amid a directive by the state government to residents to obtain guns in order to defend themselves against bandits who appear to be ravaging the state.
According the government, the measure became necessary following the deteriorating security situation in parts of the state.
“I have not received any directive and also, there is a ban on firearms licence and we don’t give licence,” Elkana told Punch.
Northwest Nigeria has seen a sharp rise in mass abductions and other violent crimes since late 2020 as the government struggles to maintain law and order.
Last year, bandits made international headlines with a series of high-profile attacks on schools and colleges where they kidnapped hundreds of pupils. Most were released but some of those students are still being held.
