The National Coordinator of Oodua Peoples’ Congress (OPC), Gani Adams, on Wednesday, said the Yoruba tribe is the fifth most respected tribe in the world. He said this at the launch of the Oodua Voice, a radio station and Oodua Magazine in London, United Kingdom. He said the tribe had over 200 million of its members scattered all over the world with 60 million in Nigeria. He said the information was contained in the CIA World Fact Book as revealed by a BBC Documentary about three years ago.
“One of the primordial distinguishing factors , which set us , the Yoruba people , who have been estimated to be over 200 million scattered all over the world with almost 60 million in Nigeria , according to the CIA World Fact book making us one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa ,is the uniqueness of our culture and tradition . Reinforcing this CIA World Fact Book, a BBC documentary aired 3 years ago revealed that, ‘Yoruba is the fifth respectable race in the world’.
He, however, said the tribe was losing the culture and tradition which won them the recognition to modern culture. He said this was due to urbanisation caused by the gloom in the economy in the early 80s.
