Isa Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has said his ministry and telecommunications industry should always prioritise national security over economic benefits.
Pantami said this during the launch of the NCC’s strategic vision plan (SVP) on Tuesday in Abuja in reaction to the shutdown of telecommunications service in Zamfara State.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had on September 4 instructed all telecommunications companies to shut down their services in Zamfara State over lingering insecurity in the state.
Pantami’s ministry supervises the operations of the NCC.
According to the minister, his ministry does not joke with security, adding that it constantly supports the security agencies.
He said: “We have even been compromising the economic progress of our sector because of our aim in supporting security institutions.
“At any point in time in the telecommunication sector, our position is ‘security takes precedence over economic benefits’.
“Security is our priority followed by economic benefits. But if two things can be pursued, this one is our priority.”
